South African Airways Attempts To Recover Millions From Zimbabwe Government

South African Airways (SAA) says it’s in discussions with the Zimbabwe authorities in a bid to recover millions of dollars in debt. SAA said Zimbabwe owes more than US $7 million but was making progress in repaying its debt.

SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said this week:

“There are ongoing discussions between us and the Zimbabwean authorities to ensure that funds due to SAA are finally and fully repatriated”

Zimbabwe and other African countries are said to owe SAA more than R1billion in tickets. The South African government-owned airline has incurred losses in the billions of rand in the past decade, and attempts to turn it around over that time have failed.

The Zimbabwean government, on the other hand, is going through a currency crisis resulting from not having its own currency and an acute forex shortage.
