Khupe Concerned Of Her Safety At Tsvangirai Memorial Service

The late MDC president and former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s memorial service will be held on February 14, exactly a year from his passing on.

The former MDC vice president and now president of MDC-T Thokozani Khupe has misgivings about attending the service as she fears for her security.

Khupe was assaulted by alleged members of the MDC Alliance youth wing, the Vanguard during Tsvangirai’s funeral last year. MDC-T spokesperson Ms Linda Masarira confirmed that Dr Khupe had been invited but was not sure if she will attend, fearing for her safety. Said Masarira:

At the funeral, there was police presence yet violence occurred. We are not sure what kind of security measures they have in place that will curb violence in case it happens again considering the violent nature and intolerance of our erstwhile Cdes.

MDC Alliance spokesperson Mr Jacob Mafume said that his party will attend the service. He said:

Yes, we will attend the memorial service for our leader. We will cooperate as usual with the family to ensure that the event is a success in whatever way they might want from us.

MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa has been at loggerheads with Khupe since the death of Tsvangirai. The duo fell out over succeeding Tsvangirai. Chamisa emerged as the winner as he had been handpicked by Tsvangirai to represent him in the Alliance.
