15 Border Jumpers Pelt Soldier, Police Officer With Stones, Flee To SA

Fifteen suspected border jumpers allegedly stoned an army officer and beat up his police colleague after they tried to obstruct their illegal passage to South Africa.

The incident reportedly occurred at an illegal crossing point near Chikwarakwara Irrigation scheme, 120km east of Beitbridge Border Post.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) could neither confirm nor deny the incident. Beitbridge Rural Police officer-in-charge Inspector John Mabhungu referred questions to his provincial Press and liaison office in Gwanda, which was closed on Sunday.

A Newsday source who preferred anonymity said:

The border jumpers then crossed the (Limpopo) river into South Africa. The injured soldier was taken for attention at the Chikwarakwara Clinic and a report made at Tshitulipasi Police base.
