Muchinguri-Kashiri Says Mugabe Intimidated Her Into Handing Over Book On Tongogara's Death

ZANU PF Chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri says former President Robert Mugabe seized a book that she had written on the death of Zimbabwe National Liberation Army (ZANLA) Commander, General Josiah Tongogara. Tongogara died in a car crash in Mozambique on 26 December 1976, a few months before Zimbabwe officially gained independence from Britain.

Speaking at the 39th memorial service for Tongogara, Muchinguri-Kashiri wept as she gave her version of what transpired on the fateful night. Said Muchinguri

I wrote a book on the story [of Tongogara’s death]. I did not know that I was not allowed. Maybe now we can say it because the people are dead.

When I wrote the book, I was summoned by former President Mugabe [then Prime Minister], who was in the company of the country’s military commanders Generals Solomon Mujuru, Vitalis Zvinavashe and Josiah Tungamirai, all bedecked in their official uniforms.

You know how scary that is. I was asked to hand over the book.
