Mutodi Demands $500 Daily From 'Broke' Govt For Using Personal Car On Official Business

The Deputy Minister for Media, Information and Broadcasting Services, Energy Mutodi reportedly demanded that the government pay him a daily sum of $500 for using his personal car for official business.

Mutodi allegedly turned down chauffeur trained by the state, instead, demanding a driver of his own choice whom he could ‘trust’. The ‘trusted’ driver, however, crashed the car a day after it had been issued.

The damaged car, a Toyota Prado, requires $61 000 to repair. According to a Standard source

The deputy minister insisted on using an inappropriate driver as his personal driver.

The driver had an accident within a day of the deputy minister being given a Prado.

The car was extensively damaged and the ministry now needs $61 000 to repair it.

The ministry has no extra car to give and a response from Mangwana indicated that the state would service his car.

When requested for comment over the matter, the permanent secretary in the Media Ministry Ndavaningi Mangwana said

Mutodi is my minister, I can’t talk or discuss with you his conditions of service.

Mutodi acknowledged that the car was indeed involved in an accident but refuted the allegations that he is demanding $500 a day. Said Mutodi

I did not charge the ministry for using my car.

The cost of wear and tear for my car is (borne by me).

Yes, I am using my car because the ministry has not yet allocated a car to me. The government has not yet acquired vehicles.

Yes, I was given a car and was involved in an accident and the ministry could not replace the car. The other party admitted that they were guilty and paid a fine.
