Doctors at Mpilo General Hospital took to the streets today as the strike by health personnel from public health institutions continues.
The strike shows no signs of abetting as senior doctors have reportedly joined their juniors in the strike.
The doctors downed tools earlier this month demanding better working conditions. The government has tried in vain to persuade them to go back to work.
On Wednesday, state-controlled media reported that the striking doctors had abandoned the strike and decided to go back to work. This was quickly dismissed by the Zimbabwe Hospitals Doctors Association (ZHDA). In a statement on Wednesday, ZHDA said
Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) wishes to inform its membership, key stakeholders, members of the press and public that the industrial action by doctors nationwide is still ongoing and has entered day 12.
This follows contrary reports unilaterally declared on state media alleging that; the grievances raised by doctors were being addressed and the return of normalcy in the health sector is to be expected. What is being witnessed is a gross misrepresentation of facts and complete disregard of the gravity of this matter. None of the grievances has been addressed and negotiations are being deliberately delayed and done in bad faith.
The nation may be keen to know, since the industrial action started there have been only two engagements with the Ministry of Health and no direct or documented response to address the grievances have been made.
