UPDATED: Former Minister Undenge Acquitted Of Abuse Of Office Charges

Former Minister Of Energy and Power Development and G40 Kingpin, Samuel Undenge was on Monday acquitted of the charges of abuse of office. The charges related to his alleged influence in the awarding of the Gwanda Solar Power Project deal with Wicknell Chivayo.

Undenge was being accused of influencing the awarding of the Gwanda solar power plant tender by Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) to Intratrek Zimbabwe when he was still Energy minister. Intratrek is a company owned by controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

According to the State, Intratrek Zimbabwe was awarded the said tender at the instigation of Undenge resulting in ZPC losing over $5 million. Chivayo is out on bail in charges related to the same issue.

Harare Magistrate, Barbara Chimboza on Monday ruled that the payment made to Itraterk was done without Undenge’s approval. She reproved the State witness and former ZPC managing director Noah Gwariro for not telling the court the truth.

The magistrate said that the evidence produced by the state was unreliable. As A result, there was no case to answer for Undenge and he was acquitted.
