Chamisa Is Illegitimate, MDC Should Go To Congress To Choose New Leader- Activists

Activists who refer themselves as Defending MDC Tsvangirai Legacy (DMTL) have demanded an urgent elective congress to choose a new party leader, claiming that incumbent Nelson Chamisa is illegitimate.

The group also accused Chamisa of imposing candidates in the last elections which they said resulted in the party losing. The group’s press briefing was disrupted by pro-Chamisa youths who dismissed the group as members of the rival MDC-T party led by former deputy prime minister Thokozani Khupe. The group’s information officer Weber Chinyadza said:

The fundamental right of members of this party to choose their own leaders and to stand to be elected for any party position should be respected without negotiation. Further, the current process to bastardise elective structures for the congress in order to ensure the election of a preferred candidate should be abolished. In any event, the constitution of the party is very clear on the timetable for any congress especially after the passing on of an incumbent president. No one should be allowed to, willy-nilly, change those provisions for the purposes of self-aggrandisement.
