Updated: Chamisa Clarifies On Obert Mpofu’s Phone Call On August 1

MDC president Nelson Chamisa has rubbished a statement made by former minister of Home Affairs Obert Mpofu. On Tuesday, Mpofu told the Motlanthe Commission that he called Chamisa in the afternoon on August 1 advising him to rein in MDC supporters who were said to be engaging in violence in town. Mpofu went on to say that in the conversation, Chamisa conceded that he had lost the Presidential election to ZANU PF candidate Emmerson Mnangagwa. Chamisa has denied the allegations outright. He had this to say about Mpofu’s phone call

Econet is my service provider. His call was never about the result but the people he alleged to be MDC. It was so bizarre to receive a call from Mpofu. This was his first and last call to me up to today. Why would I discuss unannounced results to concede to a mere junior minister?

We’ve penetrated, shaken and defeated forces and kingdoms of darkness. It’s not going to be easy. Darkness will try to fight back through lies, falsehoods and deceptive plots. They will fail and lose. One day and soon, Zimbabwe shall be the land of the free, just and happy.

Former cabinet minister in the Mugabe adminstration Jonathan Moyo who has become a leading critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa also threw jibes at his former colleague, Mpofu, saying he lied before the commission.

Obert, the now disobedient son recruited into the CIO by Mnangagwa in 1980 to spy on Zapu leaders, is lying under oath. He should be required to produce the recording he claims he did. Only blithering idiots will believe his lie that Nelson Chamisa admitted on 1 Aug he had lost!

  1. I would like to believe that this statement was made out of the need to defend the move to unmask the reasons behind 01 August Violence. In Chamisa’s efforts to clarify issues to do with mismanaged behavior, he should know admitting is the key to calm poisonous, envious minds. His resistance hardened the crew which fueled from him for the 01 Aug violence.

  2. Truth only will serve this nation and inform statemanship culture in Zimbabwe and African political leadership or else the cost remain quite devastating.
