Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba failed to appear before the Harare Magistrate’s court again.
The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said as a result of Chigumba’s failure to appear in court today the accused Tawona Shadaya was freed. Said ZLHR:
Zimbabwean court set free Night Tawona Shadaya after ZEC Chair Justice Priscilla Chigumba failed to appear in court today for commencement of trial of the 25 year-old man accused of criminal insult after he allegedly retweeted a message from a ghost account in the name of Chigumba
Chigumba failed to appear in court last Wednesday resulting in the postponement of the matter in which Tawona Shadaya, allegedly retweeted a tweet from a fake account purporting to belong to the ZEC boss. Tawona had indicated that on November 27 he will make an application for refusal of further remand. He who was arrested after re-tweeting a post from a fake Priscilla Chigumba account successfully made an application to change his guilty plea. He was being charged with criminal insult after retweeting a message purportedly belonging to Chigumba in August. Shadaya appeared before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa and was remanded to November 20.
