Cholera Outbreak Hits Mt Darwin, 20 Gold Panners Hospitalised

About 20 suspected cases of cholera have been reported in Mt Darwin district in Mashonaland Central.

All sources were reported at Mukaradzi Mine with the majority of the affected being artisanal miners. All the patients are admitted at Mt Darwin District Hospital. District Medical Officer Dr George Mapiye was said to be locked up in a series of meetings to ensure rapid response to the outbreak.

Zimbabwe has been experiencing recurrent cholera outbreaks since the turn of the millennium. The last major outbreak was contained a few weeks ago. It started in Glen View and spread to different parts of the country. by the middle os September 2018, the outbreak had resulted in the death of 45 people. By far the worst cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe occurred in 2008 and over 4 000 people died as a result.
