Industry And Commerce Minister Says Govt Won't Resort To Price Controls
The Minister of Industry and Commerce has ruled out the return of price controls. Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu spoke after meeting business leaders yesterday in Harare. The meeting was convened in order to find lasting solutions to the scourge of price hikes. He said the government would rather focus on assisting manufacturers and producers by availing foreign currency through the RBZ especially the agriculture industry since it provides a lot of raw materials for industry. He said
I have said it before that as Government, we will not be tempted to go back to price controls, but when we are talking of liberalism, we need to be more responsible and discipline ourselves.
Therefore, as a ministry, our hope is that we can develop internal peer monitoring mechanisms that will ensure that consumers at the end of the day are not left worse off.
