Harare City To Install 100 000 Pre-paid Water Meters In January 2019

Harare City Council will roll out pre-paid water meters in January next year. The projects will initially target 100 000 households but this will be on a voluntary basis after protests by residents groups. The issue of pre-paid water meters has been a controversial one with Harare residents groups against the whole idea. The groups feel the move will make water, which is a basic need, very expensive for the majority of residents. Speaking to Harare residents in Avondale over the weekend, Harare mayor Herbert Gomba said

I know a number of our residents have been alleging that they are being overcharged. Well, next year we are rolling out the pre-paid system. It’s optional and those who don’t want them can stay on the post-paid system but should pay their bills. We are in the process of working out modalities to cater for the marginalised but the idea is that everyone should contribute towards service delivery.
