10-year Jail Terms For Illegal Currency Dealers

Under regulations to come into effect from tomorrow, illegal currency dealers will now be jailed 10 years. This comes after President Emmerson Mnangagwa used temporary powers under the Presidential Powers (Temporary Measures) Act to promulgate the new regulations. However, parliament needs to approve the law within six months to make it permanent. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Virginia Mabhiza said

There have been two legislative interventions which have been made by His Excellency. The first one is an amendment to the Exchange Control Regulations (Exchange Control Act). The definition of ‘dealer’ is further clarified to assist judicial officers in interpreting the law and also the general public in appreciating the law.
