Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) commissioner (investigations) Goodson Nguni confirmed to NewsDay that they are investigating former Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo.
Nguni said they are investigating Chombo after the Harare City Council lodged a complaint. A source close to the matter told NewsDay that Zacc is investigating Chombo over an airport road deal in which Harare City Council lost millions of dollars. The source said Harare businessman Ken Sharpe was awarded a contract without going to tender by Michael Mahachi. Mahachi was appointed by Chombo to head a commission to manage Harare City Council. The source said there is no evidence that the commission sat and approved the contract.Sharpe was also given land as part of the payment.
The source also said Council paid millions to Sharp’s Augur Investments even before any equipment moved onto the site. The road project was later completed by the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara). In 2016, Zacc as well as the Auditor-General Mildred Chiri’s office called for an investigation into the 20km project known as Joshua Nkomo Expressway.
