Vet Officers Kill and Burn Cattle At Roadblock In Centenary

Veterinary Services officers in Muzarabani confiscated, killed and burnt cattle and goats at a police roadblock in Centenary. A farmer from St Alberts identified as Gore Rema was arrested and had four of his cattle killed and burnt. Another farmer had 21 goats killed and burnt as well. Rema was transporting his cattle to concession for safekeeping. He had no permit and was fined $20. Mashonaland province has been reeling from an outbreak of foot and mouth disease and the movement of livestock is restricted. This is done to reduce the spread of the infectious disease. Mashonaland Provincial veterinary officer Wilmort Chukurunhe said

Since we have placed the province’s eight districts under quarantine and have stopped the movement of livestock due to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth, it is therefore not unusual to hear that we have burnt four cattle and 21 goats in Muzarabani district.
