The price of bread has been adjusted from $1.10 to $1.40 a loaf with effect from tomorrow. This marginal increase comes after the government assured the baking industry that it will provide i’ts assistence. The baking industry initially proposed to hike the price of bread to $2.20 a loaf but backed down after the government intervened. The latest adjustment comes in the wake of a surge in the prices of goods and services across the board. In a statement The National Bakers’ Association of Zimbabwe (NBAZ) said
We therefore notify the public that the price of a standard loaf should not exceed $1,30 and $1,40 to the wholesale and consumers… This watered down increase has been arrived at following the Government’s intervention through the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe that has committed to avail to the bakery industry at least 80 percent of its monthly foreign currency requirements from a current maximum of 35 percent allocation.
