Zimra Officials To Spend 27 Months In Prison For Undercharging Minister’s Wife

Tendai Hombiro and Moses Nyango who are employed by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport will spend the next 27 months in prison after they undercharged goods belonging to Eristinah Gumbo, wife of Minister of Energy and Power Development, Joram Gumbo. The two were sentenced to 36 months in prison after Harare magistrate Hosea Mujaya convicted them of criminal abuse of office. However, 9 months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that Eristinah raised alarm after she was charged only $489 instead of $1 936 in May this year. She is said to have reported the issue to her husband who ordered Zimra to investigate, resulting in the arrest of Hombiro and Nyango. The pair was found to have flouted Zimra procedures by not weighing Eristinah’s goods before charging duty.
