Claudius Muzvimba (35) formerly of Avondale Police Station was sentenced to 19 months in prison and ordered to repay $2000 after he was convicted on 104 counts of fraud by Harare Magistrate Francis Mapfumo. Muzvimba who was found in possession of fake traffic offence fines receipt books (Z69J) had pleaded not guilty claiming that he had been given the books by his superiors to receipt traffic fines at roadblocks. However, the court found the evidence against him overwhelming. In passing sentence, Magistrate Mapfumo said,
The accused’s moral blameworthiness is very high. It’s unfortunate that he started at the deep end, is a youthful first-time offender. Such crimes are on the rise and a clear message should be sent to the society that fraud and corruption by those entrusted with public offices will not be tolerated It’s not a coincidence that only five cops out of 50 stationed at Avondale would use the book. Evidence against the accused is overwhelming and cannot be disputed that he committed the offence as alleged.
The trials of Muzvimba’s four accomplices Romeo Chipokosa, 32, Llyod Makuni, 31, Takuranshe Magomba and Blesssmore Mushayahwaro, 30, are still ongoing.
