Chinese Back In Chiadzwa After Pressure From Beijing

Chinese diamond company, Anjin Investments’s licence for mining diamonds is reported to have been restored after intense pressure from the Chinese government. Following allegations of looting, all diamond mining companies were thrown out from the Chiadzwa diamond fields in 2016 and forced to merge into the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC). Centre for Natural Resources Governance (CNG) director Farai Maguwu said,

Yes, I am aware and they were seen loitering in Marange barely two weeks after (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa took over the reins of power (in November last year). It is sad that a company that was accused by former Finance minister Tendai Biti for not remitting anything to Treasury has been re-engaged to continue looting…Mnangagwa must tell us something good that Anjin did which we all don’t know.

Mines and Mining Development minister Winston Chitando is yet to comment on the matter.
