Oppah Muchinguri Tasked With Reining In The Security Sector, Removing Military From Politics
Minister of Defence and War Veterans, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri is reported to have been tasked by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to rein in the security forces and to ensure that the military stays out of politics and sticks to its constitutional mandate. According to some commentators, President Emmerson Mnangagwa is doing this to protect himself from a potential military coup. According to a document, titled Key Performance Indicators for the Government which was obtained by the Zimbabwe Independent, Muchinguri-Kashiri was tasked with the following assignments,
• Rein in on the security sector to foster peace in the country and not to terrorise civilians;
• Improving the welfare of those in the security including junior staff;
• Looking after the welfare of war veterans.
• Security sector professionalism;
• Separating security sector from political activities as per constitution; and
• Retooling of the Air Force of Zimbabwe.
In an interview with NewsDay, Muchinguri Kashiri said,
I am looking forward to conferring with the President if it means that the reforms that you are talking about will be necessary because this has been an issue raised over and over again.
