The government through the Ministry of Local government has been taken to the High Court by CEOs from most of the country’s rural districts under the Rural District Council Chief Executives’ Forum (RDCCEF). The CEO’s want the High Court to nullify a directive issued by the ministry in 2014 which capped their salaries at $1 900 per month saying that it is illegal and prejudicial. Part of the RDCCEF court papers read,
When this directive was issued, it was not based on the circumstances of the parties, which were not even considered, but a unilateral interference with an existing contractual relationship between the respective councils and their employers…In the premises, I pray for an order setting aside the directive in terms thereof.
The government is yet to respond.
