Silas Chitate, the headmaster of Makumbe Mission Junior School, was on Wednesday convicted of rape by Harare magistrate Nyasha Vhitorini and sentenced to 18 years in prison. Chitate raped an orphaned Grade 7 pupil, whom he had offered shelter for the night after they returned late from a school trip. In passing sentence magistrate Vhitorini said,
You have destroyed the life of a child, physically and socially and you should get appropriate punishment. A lengthy custodial sentence will be appropriate in this case. It’s disappointing and shocking to imagine that a school head, as old and educated as you are, would take advantage of such a young girl who has a whole future ahead of her.
3 years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
