Chief Justice Luke Malaba Heckled, Humiliated In Parliament

Chief Justice Luke Malaba was heckled and booed by opposition supporters on Tuesday when he came to preside over the swearing in of the Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Tsitsi Gezi. The ceremony had to be delayed for close to 20 minutes as the opposition supporters sang and danced chanting.  The opposition supporters felt aggrieved by the way the Malaba led Constitutional Court handled the electoral petition filed by Nelson Chamisa challenging the results of the 2018 election.

The ruling Zanu-PF members of parliament tried to drown out the chants by shouting the campaign slogan “ED Pfee” but were ultimately unsuccessful. Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziymabi also unsuccessfully tried to restore order. Malaba was able to swear in the two speakers eventually.
