Eldorado Rescue Mission Abandoned Due To Safety Concerns, Mine’s Access Points To Be Sealed Off

Government through the Ministry Of Mines and Mining Development has ordered that the rescue mission to retrieve the bodies of illegal miners from the Eldorado mine should be abandoned. The officials said the mission was impossible and posed a threat to the rescuers. Between 12 and 14 illegally miners are suspected to be trapped after the Chinhoyi mine collapsed last week. Only one body was retrieved. Instead, all access points to the mine will be sealed off as a precautionary measure to stop artisanal miners, some of whom are reported to have continued mining despite the collapse.

Families of those suspected to have been trapped have been informed of the decision.
