South African president Cyril Ramaphosa has echoed the words of former president Robert Mugabe by telling United States president Donald Trump to keep his America, saying that he would keep his South Africa. Speaking at the Earth Summit in South Africa in 2002, Mugabe said,
We have fought for our land, we have fought for our sovereignty, small as we are we have won our independence and we are prepared to shed our blood … So, Blair keep your England, and let me keep my Zimbabwe.
Ramaphosa’s statement comes on the back of Trumps’s comments last week when he criticised South Africa’s land reform programme and claimed that there were large-scale killings of white farmers in South Africa due. Trump added that he had tasked US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to look into the matter.
