We Will Not Block Mandela’s Lawyer Jeremy Gauntlett From Representing Chamisa: Ziyambi

In an interview with NewsDay’s Richard Chidza (ND)Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi (ZZ) said his ministry will not block any foreign lawyers who intend to represent MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.

Ziyambi’s vow comes after Chamisa’s legal team applied to his ministry for a ministerial certificate for South African lawyer Jeremy Gauntlett who was the lawyer for South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela. Gauntlett who is a Senior Counsel (SC) and a Queen’s Counsel (QC) is supposed to argue a portion of Nelson Chamisa’s challenge of the presidential election results. Gauntlett joins other leading South African lawyers Advocates Dali Mpofu and Thembaka Ngcukaitobi on the case. Ziyambi said his ministry will process the application and forward the application to the Law Society of Zimbabwe. Below is the excerpt of the interview:

ND: The opposition has brought in lawyers from the region and beyond, do you have their application to operate in the country?

ZZ: My secretary has indicated that indeed, we have their application for their advocates to operate and we will process it. We don’t want to be seen to be blocking what they are trying to do. As practice, we will forward the application to the Law Society of Zimbabwe and if they grant the request, so be it. But we will not block anyone. Our hope is that the Constitutional Court will apply its mind to the issues being raised. Our belief is that election issues are addressed not in the courts, but at the ballot box. So at the end of the day, we hope the will of the people will be upheld.

  1. Dai mari yese iri kushandiswa naChamisa akaiendesa kuno pedzisa library kuWadzana aigona kutozowana mamwe mavotes next time kwete kuswero kurwisa chaunoziva kuti chinokukurira

  2. Why blocking him our country is democratic, the problem will only come when Chamisa is threatening to resort to violence when the Con Court did not rule in his favour.
