MDC Alliance Candidate Challenges Results In Bulawayo South, Says Some Ballot Papers Did Not Have His Name

The Bulawayo High Court is set to hear the matter in which MDC Alliance candidate for Bulawayo South Mr Muvirimi Francis Mangwendeza is challenging the results of the recently-held elections in which he lost to Zanu-PF’s Rajesh Kumara Indukant Modi on Friday.

In his petition Mangwendeza cited Modi and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) as respondents. He is seeking an order nullifying the results and declaring the seat vacant. He argues that Zec de-campaigned him when it published a statement declaring he had withdrawn from the race without his knowledge and verification. He argues those who supported him thought he was no longer in the race.

Magwendeza said on July 29, it turned out that some ballot papers had his name missing in Ward 21 and Ward 6. He said Zec had indicated they would cancel those ballot papers which had his name missing but it turned out that this was not the case as it emerged that not all the ballot papers in question were cancelled. Mangwendeza said he received confirmation from various polling stations indicating that most of the ballot papers did not have his names on them.
