In an interview with NewsDay’s Richard Chidza (ND), Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi (ZZ) clarified President Mnangagwa’s tweet where he said he facilitated the release of MDC Alliance principal Tendai Biti.
Ziyambio said the tweet did not mean Mnangagwa had given a directive to the judiciary to have Biti released. He said Mnangagwa was reiterating a policy stance. He said to the best of his knowledge, Mnangagwa had not interfered. Below is an excerpt of the interview:
ND: What kind of intervention did the President-elect make on the Biti issue?
ZZ: As far as I know there was no direct intervention on a specific case, but a general policy direction that if someone is arrested, their rights should be asserted in a manner that is consistent with the Constitution. What was perhaps amplified by the tweet was that as a country, the policy of ensuring fundamental human rights is carried forward.
