ZDF Says Soldiers Beating Up People May Be Criminals Trying To Tarnish It's Image, Urges People To Report To Police

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) have stressed that they did not deploy any soldiers to patrol residential areas and to beat up civilians. This follows reports from a number of high-density residential areas that soldiers are assaulting civilians after the protest by opposition supporters last Wednesday.  The protest resulted in the deaths of at least 6 people after soldiers used live bullets to quell the protest which had turned violent. Said Zimbabwe Defence Forces spokesperson, Colonel Overson Mugwisi,

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces has not deployed soldiers in any residential area to beat up people at night or any time of the day as alleged in your media query. If there are any individuals masquerading as our members committing crime, these might be criminals bent on tarnishing the image of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. They should, therefore, be reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for their appropriate action.

Neighbourhoods which have reported of assaults by soldiers include, Kuwadzana, Glen View, Glen Norah, Mbare, Chitungwiza and Westwood.
