A number of businesses have closed early in the Harare central business district, as opposition supporters demonstrate against the election results released by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec). Some of the protesters have gathered at the Harare International Conference Centre, where Zec has its command centre and are protesting that the elections have been rigged.
Some of the protestors are reported to be burning Zanu-PF flags as well as posters of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The European Union Election Observer Mission and the American International Republican Institute (IRI)/National Democratic Institute (NDI) election observer team have all called on Zec to release the results for the presidential election as soon as possible in order to ensure credibility and diffuse tension.
