Pro-democracy activist and founder of #This Flag Movement, Evan Mawarire has conceded defeat in the local government elections. Mawarire who was running for the Harare Ward 17, Mount Pleasant seat, said that he had lost to the spokesperson for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Jacob Mafume who was running under the MDC Alliance banner. Writing on his Twitter timeline, Mawarire said,
With much respect and admiration, I congratulate Jacob Mafume @JMafume of the MDC Alliance on his win of the Mt Pleasant Ward 17 council seat. You ran well my friend and I wish you the best as you serve the people of Mt Pleasant & the city of Harare.

Mawarire had not joined any political party, and was running as an independent candidate under a coalition of independent candidates known as the People’s Own Voice (Povo).
We await official confirmation from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec).
