Jessie Majome, Fadzayi Mahere Defeated As Independent Candidates Fare Poorly In Elections

Most Independent candidates fared poorly in the recently held harmonised elections as people seem to have voted along party lines, with most voters preferring to vote for the ruling Zanu-PF party and the coalition MDC Alliance. Most independents who were running for the first time, as well as those who were experienced but had fallen out with their former parties, were defeated by candidates representing the two main political parties. Here is a compilation of some of the Independent candidates who lost.

Fadzayi Mahere

Aspiring member of parliament for Mount Pleasant, Fadzayi Mahere, who ran a highly visible campaign, which received plaudits from many, lost to MDC Alliance candidate Samuel Banda. Banda also defeated incumbent Zanu-PF legislator Jaison Passade. Mahere who had always said that she would either win or learn something from the process said,

We consistently said that we’d win or we’d learn. We’ve learnt that it’s important to take a stand, to speak up, to participate, to innovate, to challenge, to collaborate, to step outside one’s comfort zone and to be the change. We thank you ALL for your support. #ForeverYellow

Jessie Majome

Former Harare West legislator Jessie Majome lost the Harare West seat to Joanna Mamombe of the MDC Alliance. Majome withdrew from the MDC-T primary elections and stood as an independent after citing irregularities in the MDC-T primary elections.

Dear Harare Westerners, Zec has announced the results and I congratulate Ms. for being elected Harare West MP. I wish her well. Special thanks to those who supported and voted for me. Thank you Harare West for the honour of serving you. It’s been a pleasure!

Evan Mawarire

Pro-democracy activist and founder of #This Flag Movement, Evan Mawarire earlier on today conceded defeat in the local government elections. Mawarire who was running for the Harare Ward 17, Mount Pleasant seat, lost to Jacob Mafume who was running under the MDC Alliance banner. Writing on his Twitter timeline, Mawarire said,

With much respect and admiration, I congratulate Jacob Mafume ⁦@JMafume⁩ of the MDC Alliance on his win of the Mt Pleasant Ward 17 council seat. You ran well my friend and I wish you the best as you serve the people of Mt Pleasant & the city of Harare.

Duduzile Nyirongo, Local Government – Avondale

Duduzile Nyirongo, who was running under the People’s Own Voice (Povo) coalition of independent candidates lost the local government election for Ward 7, Avondale, to Happymore Gotora of the MDC Alliance.  Said Nyirongo,

A big thank you to all those that supported me.I gave my very best but the people have spoken and have decided that Gotora of the MDC Alliance be the councillor for Harare Ward 7. Wishing him all the best.
