I Will Not Vote For Mnangagwa, They Have Tormented Me: Mugabe

Former president Robert Mugabe has said that he will not vote for his successor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa in tomorrow’s elections. Mugabe made it clear that he was not going to vote for the people who had tormented him and said that he was going to make his choice from the remaining pool of 22 candidates.

Mugabe mentioned three candidates by name, Joice Mujuru, Thokozani Khupe and Nelson Chamisa but said that the two women did not have much support, which left only Chamisa. Speaking about Chamisa, Mugabe said that although he is yet to meet the MDC Alliance leader, he has been impressed by his rise and wished him well in the event that he wins the election. Mugabe also spoke out against the Zimbabwe Defence Forces which he accused of his their guns in order to thrust President Emmerson Mnangagwa into power. Speaking to the press ahead of tomorrow’s elections, Mugabe said,

I cannot vote for those who have tormented me. I can’t. I’ll make my choice among the other 22. It’s a long list, I worked with Mai Mujuru, I worked with also Mai Khupe…There are other names that I am seeing for the first time. There is Chamisa. I have not worked with him. I have seen him work with his late leader Tsvangirai. I lie, I worked with him in our Government of National Unity.

…He seems to be doing well going by his rise. Whoever wins and if he does I wish him well. But, I hope the choice, the voting which must be done tomorrow…will reform and will thrust away a military form of government and bring us back to Constitutionality. We must have a democratic constitution. That is what we fought for, the people.

So the election tomorrow, is it to bring democracy? To bring constitutionality? To bring freedom or shall we see a return of the same rule we have experienced since November? I say, congratulations to whosoever, whichsoever party wins the day and let us accept that verdict. Let us all pray that tomorrow brings us good news. and I believe good news to everyone is that we get our freedom back, we get our democracy back with its legality and with its constitutionality and thrust away the hypocrisy…

When he was fielding questions from the media, Mugabe later clarified that he was not going to vote for Joice Mujuru and Thokozani Khupe as they do not seem to have enough support.
