Former Minister of Energy Samuel Undenge who was last week convicted of abuse of office, has instructed his lawyers to apply for bail pending appeal at the High Court arguing that he was wrongly convicted. Undenge decided to abandon his application for bail pending appeal at the Magistrate’s court saying that his case was being handled unfairly at the lower court.
Undenge’s lawyer Alec Muchadehama told Harare Magistrate Hosea Mujaya,
We are no longer pursuing the application. I have instructions to approach the High Court directly.
Speaking to New Zimbabwe later, Muchadehama said,
The State’s response is slow and its unfair for my client. There was no justice to this case and the state continues to drag its feet while my client is languishing in prison.
Undenge who was convicted by Magistrate Hosea Mujaya, was sentenced to 4 years in prison. The magistrate suspended a year and a half leaving the former minister to serve an effective two and half years in prison.
