MDC Alliance Candidate Mashayamombe To Stand Trial For Violence

Harare magistrate Francis Mapfumo dismissed MDC Alliance candidate for Harare South constituency Shadreck Mashayamombe’s application for removal from remand. Mashayamombe is facing public violence charges for an offence he committed in 2015 when he was still a Zanu-PF member.

He is accused of assaulting some party supporters on suspicions they were going to pass a vote of no confidence in him. In his application Mashayamombe argued the witnesses who initially intended to withdraw the matter were not forth coming. In dismissing the application, Mapfumo said the State should be given more time to put its house in order and locate the witnesses. Mapfumo remanded the matter to August 2 for trial.

Mashayamombe is jointly charged with Peckias Murindi (27), Joseph Gakaka (31), Vengai Mutepaire (31) and Charles Saungweme (26). The State alleges on April 15, 2015, Zanu-PF’s Harare provincial executive called for a meeting at its provincial headquarters. Mashayamombe and his accomplices mobilised themselves and planned to disrupt the meeting which they claimed had been organised to pass a vote of no confidence on Mashayamombe.
