UK Govt Should Not Rush To Endorse Election As Free And Fair, Constitution Is Not Being Adhered To : UK MP

United Kingdom Member of Parliament for Vauxhall, Kate Hoey on Wednesday told Prime Minister Teresa May that the Constitution was not being adhered to in Zimbabwe ahead of the July 30 elections. She went on to ask the Prime Minister for reassurance that the UK government would not rush to endorse the election as free and fair. Here is the exchange,

Kate Hoey,

The Prime Minister will know that later this month Zimbabwe will have its first election since Mugabe was ousted by a military coup. My hon. Friend the Member for Bournemouth West (Conor Burns) and I have recently returned from Zimbabwe, and we heard from Zimbabweans concerns that that will not be a genuinely free and fair election. The constitution is not being adhered to, and the main Opposition do not have a chance to reach the state media. Will the Prime Minister give an assurance that our Government will not rush to agree that this is a free and fair election until we have seen that it really means change, not just for the election?

Teresa May,

I commend the excellent work that the hon. Lady continues to do as chair of the all-party parliamentary group on Zimbabwe. We obviously welcome the announcement of the date of the election on 30 July, but we urge all parties involved to pursue free, fair and peaceful elections, because that is absolutely what the Zimbabwean people deserve. We will certainly watch very carefully to see how those elections are conducted, and consider the conduct of those elections as appropriate. We have repeatedly said that if the Zimbabwean Government can demonstrate commitment to political and economic reform the UK stands ready to do all that it can to support recovery, but that commitment is essential.

  1. Observers have been sent, UK is also relying on reporters` comments. Its really difficulty to please everyone and it is only one candidate who is complaining.

  2. KATE HOEY DID A GOOD JOB DURING MUGABE RULE AND MADE A DOCUMENTARY THAT SAW ZIMBABWEANS DEPORTATIONS BEING STOPPED BY THE CAMERON GOVERNMENT BUT HER LATE submission to the UK Government is completely out of touch with the present situation. ED has gone an extra mile in Managing a very difficult situation by allowing freedom to people to campaign freely and calling for elections . My point is Kate Hoey must weigh and compare our Zimbabwe situation with the rest of Africa not Europe why because what ED has done will be found to be way above other African governments Kenya Rwanda UK has recognised even Nigeria our peace and liberties within the new dispensation are way above the rest of Africa. ED cannot please everyone Britain needs us as much as we need them because Brexit will mean a good relationship with ex colonies ie the Commonwealth. We are moving forward with elections ED has done his best amidst attempts on his life. CHAMISA IS the one trying to promise VIOLENCE his eartquake is only throwing spanners in the works. BRITAIN OWES US, AND ESPECIALLY THE CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT MUGABE WAS ASSURED OF VICTORY BEFORE ELECTIONS THEY GAVE HIM TOTAL POWER BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO STOP THE WAR DESPITE RAMPANT INTIMIDATION AND ASSAULT I REMEMBER ASKING ONE OBSERVER IN GUTU TO TAKE A PICTURE OF A WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN TORN APART BY A RUSSIAN MADE STICK GRENADE ON A BUS FERRYING MUZOREWA SUPPORTERS AND THE BRIT OBSERVER REFUSED AND I YANKED THE CAMERA FROM AROUND HIS NECK AND TOOK A PICTURE AND TOLD HIM TO TAKE IT TO THATCHER I WAS A SOLDIER THEN.TO CHAMISA GOOD ADVICE ZIMBABWEANS ARE TIRED OF SUFFERING DO NOT MAKE THE SECOND MISTAKE OF PROLONGING THAT SUFFERING BY THROWING SPANNERS IN THE WORKS ITS EASY FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU HAVE MONEY TO SPLASH TAKING PILGRIMAGE TO ISRAEL WHEN ORDINARY PEOPLE ARE EATING NHOKO DZEZVIRONDA YOUR GAMBIT TO PROLONG SANCTIONS WAS THE FIRST YOU BETTER GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER VANHU COME FIRST NOT YOUR OCCUPYING STATE HOUSE USATAMBA NOUPENYU WAVANHU WHO ARE SUPPORTING YOU DESPITE your lies and bungling Inda kumaelections Mufana ukaramba or cause unnecessary problems tichakiyana need kusvika zvanaka you are always complaining how will you manage as,a president if you crack so easy ?
