In an interview with The Herald, MDC-T presidential spokesman Dr Nkululeko Sibanda spoke on the withdrawal of six candidates by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
Sibanda said the candidates told the MDC Alliance that they were voluntarily withdrawing although they have now changed their stories. Sibanda said MDC Alliance also suspects that the development might be a result of people who forged signatures in an attempt to cause confusion. He said those found guilty will be dealt with. Said Sibanda:
The candidates told us that they were voluntarily withdrawing, but it now looks like they have gone back behind our backs with a different story. We suspect that it can be the work of some people working on the other side who forged signatures with an intention to cause confusion within the Alliance. The party is looking at it and those found to be behind the fraud will be brought to book.
Sibanda’s comments come after ZEC admitted that it made a mistake in claiming that six MDC Alliance candidates had withdrawn their candidature for the July 30 harmonised elections. No other party was involved in the mistake.
