High Court Orders Zanu-PF To Stop Forcing School Children, Teachers To Attend Rallies

High Court judge Justice Joseph Mafusire has passed an interdict ordering the ruling Zanu-PF party to stop forcing pupils and teachers to attend its campaign rallies. Justice Mafusire also ordered the party and the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Paul Mavima to stop using school premises, and resources such as buses and furniture for its rallies. This followed an application by the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz). Part of Justice Maguire’s order reads,

…I am satisfied that the papers placed before me classically prove prima facie requirements of an interdict. I am satisfied that applicants have laid out a prima facie case of an interdict to restrain the first respondent of the conduct complained of mainly compelling children to attend its political functions, to compel teachers to donate or fund its functions, to commandeer school property like furniture, buses and premises for its political functions and the like. In the circumstances, the interim relief sought in terms of the draft order filed with this court today is hereby granted.

Zanu-PF’s lawyer Nickel Mushangwe said that Justice Mafusire’s ruling was unfair and promised to file an appeal after consulting with his client.
