Presidential Spokesperson Deactivates Twitter Account, Complains That People Are Abusive

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba has deactivated his Twitter account only a few days after signing up. The presidential spokesperson said that he been encouraged to open the social media account by his colleagues. However, he said that it was not worth his time claiming that he was constantly on the receiving end of abuse.

The handle @GeorgeCharamba sent the following message before shutting down,

Thank you all for the engagements. I had a few good conversations but it was mostly abusive replies. I’ve always been sceptical about Twitter but was encouraged to join by fellow Cdes. I’ve however come to the conclusion that it’s not worth my time. Handle will shut in next 2hrs.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has encouraged his administration to embrace social media, unlike his predecessor former president Robert Mugabe who warned officials not to use social media. a number of senior government officials have opened social media accounts particularly Twitter, and some of these are the president himself, Foreign Affairs Minister SB Moyo, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, and Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa.
