I Will Be Around In 2030: Mnangagwa Hints At More Than Two Terms

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has dropped a strong hint that he expects to go beyond two terms in office. Perhaps following his longtime mentor and predecessor, former president Robert Mugabe’s footsteps, Mnangagwa expects to be president well into his old age as he will be 88 in 2030. Addressing industry leaders in Gweru earlier in the week Mnangagwa said,

I would want to commend the Buy Zimbabwe team which has continued to work closely with both private and public sectors to drive the buy local message and encourage the purchase of local products and services so that local businesses can thrive thereby stimulating economic growth and creating decent jobs for us to be a middle-income country by 2030. I chose 2030 and it’s not a magic year but I believe I will still be there.

This may result in the president clashing with members of the military generals who are reported to have said that he should rule for no more than two terms. Intelligence reports quoted by Reuters in December 2017 read,

The generals want Mnangagwa to run for one or two terms before handing over to Chiwenga. They want Chiwenga to be in power for two terms before handing over to the next general to be announced.
