Zimra Officials Arrested For Facilitating Smuggling Of Building Material Worth $20 200

Wisdom Matsekedza (35) and Muchineripi Hokonya (32) who are both Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) officials at Beitbridge Border Post were arrested by the Ferret team for facilitating the smuggling of building material worth $20 200.

The Ferret team is made up of the police, other security agencies and the Zimra Anti-Smuggling Unit. The Chronicle reports the duo was still in custody by end of day yesterday reportedly assisting police with investigations. The two are accused of facilitating the smuggling of 500 chromatic IBR roofing sheets from the neighbouring country after pocketing a R200 bribe from a man who was transporting the goods.

Sources close to the investigations who spoke to The Chronicle said the building material and a South African registered truck had been impounded by Zimra under notice of seizure numbers 017344 and 017 345. Hokonya and Matsekedza will appear in court soon facing charges of criminal abuse of office. Zimra’s commissioner general Ms Faith Mazani confirmed the arrests.

  1. They were just unfortunate. Zimra, police and army officers are demanding money from cross border buses at bubi, mwenezi and so many other check points along Harare beitbridge road. A lot of contraband is being smuggled in broad day light across the border. I wonder of the authorities are not aware of this.

  2. l think this situation at the boader we must not worry too much about it,what lm suggesting is that at least each car, trucks, buses pay something towards duty,if duties were lower affordable l think everyone will pay duty,
the stuff at the boader is too much,if only zimra is working there l think it will be okay
