We Will Not Shutdown Internet, Social Media Because Of Elections: Supa

Information Communication Technology and Cyber Security Minister Supa Mandiwanzira has said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration will not shut down the internet or social media due to the 2018 harmonised elections. Speaking to the Sunday Mail, Mandiwanzira said,

We have no intention to curtail Internet freedom or social media freedoms simply because there is an election. The Government values the various platforms that Zimbabweans use to share ideas and express their opinions and therefore, don’t expect us to do anything that undermines those platforms …The President himself is an active participant on social media, including Facebook and Twitter, where he personally engages with citizens and updates them on Government programmes.

We see no need to curtail the freedoms that come with Internet access. Our ministry is working hard to ensure that every citizen can have access to the Internet in future.

  1. Internet and Social Media are actualy falicilitators of those and keep people informed of events a senseble person would dare to temper with them!

  2. Not only should the country not curtail the flow of information but all forms of media including state newspapers should be opened up for equal access at all times. The Minister should take the message to Cabinet.
