Soldier Who Gunned Down Wife, 2 Siblings Seeks Bail, Cites Injuries Sustained In Suicide Attempt

Carlos Chapeyama who shot and killed his 21-year-old wife Ashley Phiri and her siblings, Nkosivumile Ncube (16) and Rita Nkomo (23) has applied for bail at the Bulawayo High Court. Chapeyama, a soldier in the Zimbabwe National Army also shot and injured his 18-month-old child Tlowi when he fired more than 20 shots in rage following infidelity accusations. He cited ill health in his application saying that he sustained injuries after a failed suicide attempt.

Part of his application reads,

I am in a bad health condition of which I cannot be treated while I am in prison since it has proved to be difficult. I suffered serious spinal, chest and abdominal injuries at the scene of the incident and I am now struggling to go to the toilet and urgently require a specialist…I would like to be granted bail so that I can be able to take care of my children and grandmother while awaiting trial.
