Harare West legislator Jessie Majome has announced that she will run as an independent candidate in the forthcoming elections. This comes after Majome withdrew from the MDC-T primary elections citing irregularities.
Speaking on The Platform hosted by Larry Kwirirayi on ZiFM Stereo on Monday evening, Majome insisted that she is still a member of the MDC-T. Said Majome:
…if it would like me to represent it in Parliament I will be running as an independent candidate. I made this decision because as I indicated I do intend to offer myself to the electorate to serve Harare West again if Harare West will have me and I wanted to do that under my party ticket but as I indicated I found the polls a farce and I pulled out of it because of that. And I still have an intention of representing my electorate if it wishes. So when I withdrew I was thinking about my options and I am encouraged very very much, I’m actually surprised by the level of support and encouragement and also urging by people in Harare West mainly and even beyond that I should still put my hat in the ring and allow myself to be subjected to judgment by the electorate in Harare West so that they can choose. And I find that this is the best and fairest way of doing this because it allows everybody who is a Harare Westerner to go to the polls and actually freely choose. Even those that were going to have party cards and even those who do not and who could not for various reasons will be able to choose and a true reflection of what Harare Westerners want is what will be reflected at the polls. That is what I have decided to do.
