Parliament Approves $153 Million Chinese Loan To Upgrade Robert Mugabe Airport

Parliament today approved the $153m China-Exim Bank Loan facility for the development and upgrading of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. It was one of the deals sealed when President Emmerson Mnangagwa went to China.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa said the loan will attract an interest of  2% per annum with a 7 year grace period and a tenure of 20 years. Chinamasa said the project is expected to yield the following benefits:

  • Increased passenger and aircraft processing areas through the expansion of the international terminal building;
  • Improved passenger processing through introduction of state of the art passenger processing and facilitation equipment and systems;
  • Runway safety assurance through completion of the runway rehabilitation and airfield ground lighting project;
