Addressing supporters in the United Kingdom, MDC-T president Nelson Chamisa declared that he would give away his 18-year-old sister to President Emmerson Mnangagwa if the incumbent managed to get just 5 percent of the total vote in a free and fair election. Said Chamisa,
If Mnangagwa wins 5% in a free election, I will give him my sister. I have a sister who just turned 18 and looking for a husband. I’m betting on this because I know it won’t happen
Chamisa saying if Mnangagwa wins just 5% in a free election he will give him his sister.
His remark received loud cheers from supporters. pic.twitter.com/fNlnvP1yGC

However, Chamisa’s remarks evoked a number of different reactions from people with some condemning the presidential hopeful for his language which they said was misogynistic and disrespectful of women. However, others applauded Chamisa for his confidence and said his statements should not be taken seriously as it was just political banter. Here is how some people reacted,
Chamisa's joke about giving ED his sister on the stage of emotive and sensationalist twitter is mistaken but in our cultural context very relevant. We often joke with neighboring fathers who say "ndokupa mukadzi" we joke at work with your mothers who call us "mukwasha" 6 na 9

as @Wamagaisa rightfully put it no long ago, and i paraphrase: the moment politicians divert from the prepared speeches is the beging of gross errors but that what fascinate audience! it was uncalled for for Chamisa to promise ED his sister should he win
— ndawana norest (@NdawanaN) May 7, 2018
Crying more than the bereaved kķkķkkk,Chamisa sister is probably even non existent,it's just supposed to be a funny joke👆
— Mazala (@dube_leslie) May 6, 2018
I am surprised by people hell bent on criticising Nelson Chamisa, at the en of the day i just want a human leader, prone to error but genuine. My current leader is prone to violence and nothing is worse, not even a joke about giving away your sister

So that Chamisa statement or 'joke' on handing over his 18 year old sister to ED if he got 5% of the vote. My interpretation of the statement is that it was used to reinforce a statement on the slim odds of ED… https://t.co/01NpaTAkrj

it was uncalled for for Chamisa to pledge his sister to ED under any circumstance. such rhetotics widen gender imbalances and has no place in the 21st century. Seeing women as objects that can be donated is regarding them as tabla rasas @matigary @cemambo @VascoDaGappah
— ndawana norest (@NdawanaN) May 7, 2018
Chamisa was just saying ED will never win the election. Are u saying he is willing to give her sister kuna Garwe ane 21 vana
— Alvano17 (@EdmoreChinamho1) May 7, 2018
Joke or figurative language – whatever point Chamisa was trying to make – the idea that a presidential candidate could put up his sister as a wager on the outcome of an election is disagreeable.

ED is married but with so many side chicks and kids. Chamisa knows tt he loves them women tts why he made a joke about giving him a sister
— Addmore sibanda (@SibandaAddmore) May 7, 2018
Chamisa is vile. How disgusting that he says he would ‘give’ his sister to ED if ED won. Wow!! on top of all that needs fixing in Zim, patriarchy is still rearing its ugly head. Women are not his to give!!
— Gugulethu (@Gugu_1210) May 7, 2018
As expected of an amateur,Chamisa has pledged to donate his 18yr old sister to President ED when ED wins the next Elections. Chamisa is a sexist who not only ill treated Khupe because she is a woman but has just also shown he blvs in imposing marriage partners for the girl child!
— Jones Musara (@JonesMusara) May 6, 2018
That was a joke don't take it serious, sometimes politicians must make a joke so that people may have minute of laughing. A normal person like knows that even if ED wins Chamisa won't give him his sister. It was just a joke.
— Mkanya🐒🇿🇼 (@ThatcherMauto) May 7, 2018
Cool down trevor its only a joke. Don't be over excited like that Chamisa doesn't even have a sister that age. When addressing people jokes are not prohibited. Ukwane
— I.N. Mburundu (@imburundu) May 6, 2018
Find out if Chamisa indeed has a sister. Find out if she is 18-years-old. Find out if she indeed is looking for someone to marry.
— Moses Ziyambi (@ZiyambiM) May 7, 2018
I’m shocked why would you pimp out your sister !!!
If he can do that to is own flesh & blood what about isu vamwe.Words reveal the quality of your minds & character Mr Chamisa. pic.twitter.com/QA5RajiL1I

Very true. Chamisa is not a comedian. His statement on giving his sister to ED is irresponsible and misogynistic. It also drags his sister into public life and risk to her if we consider political violence contexts
— Dr Keith Silika🇬🇧🇿🇼 (@csiharare) May 7, 2018
It’s just a metaphor, stupid !
Jokes that stereotype women in a negative manner might be acceptable in some quotas, but unfortunately they are not funny. They reflect deeply seated negative attitudes towards women.. which have no room in Zimbabwe….. after our progressive constitution
Chamisa should have bet on other things , I hope he doesn’t abuse him wife at anytime .He does not value his sister whether she is real or not. The fact that he said it believe me if he became our President couples be careful he can claim your wives to his property
he should have betted his wife…..does he have any ?
It was just a joke,it’s obvious that if you are against the mdc leader you will take it seriously.
Couples be careful not a good sign of a President ,he will claim your your wives to his be property. Not valued his sister. I’m not a political person hoping for the best of our country not abuse or taking us back to slave trade
its funny how people react to minor sayings. problem is people fear for themselves zvinowanikwa muupenyu izvozvo. shona haiurayi hama dzangu, what he simply implied was nothing of that sort will happen in a free and fair election. instead of worrying about the non-existent sister people could have asked what the definition of a free and fair election from his point of view. then only then when you know and understand you look at that small joke. the issue here is are you voting for him or not show by raising you hand and be counted.
So this is minor to you? This statement alone has actually earned Mnangagwa more than 10% votes, what is Chamisa going to do?
If this is a joke, it went too far! And because of this Chamisa must not be allowed to win! otherwise, our sisters are not safe!
As president material its unrealistic for Chamisa to bring about equality.Chamisa’s view of his sister is that she will always be subservient to him as the Alfa male who can get any woman he wants as opposed to his sister who has to be offered any man as long as male relatives approve. Its sad that as an MP who could not develop Kuwadzana the joke about his sister excites a group of desperados mostly women who found the joke funny at their expense. This is a desperate situation where the desire for the so called change is expected of a person who has a good track record of abusing women regardless of their position and intellect as evidenced by how Khupe was ill treated and now the sister who might be even more intelligent and an aspiring intellectual who has been reduced to begging for some assumed marital status because she is woman. It’s sad especially for people living in a 1st world- hence you can take the person out of a jungle but you can never take the jungle out the person.
As presidential material Chamisa knows nothing about equality, honor and respect. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”. Knowing President Mnangagwa is married, Chamisa’s view of women as chattel, commodities to be traded off, transacted is sad indeed. Generation change – what a joke – we fear for our daughters!
Dnt count your chicks before its like a fight never say i will beat u up sometimes its opposite i guess u hvent been in any election the results might be bitter to swallow
And remember not everyone around u might vote for u because when thy do it thy will be alone and u dont knw were the x and worried to about taliking tomuch before the end its very soon too tears of joy all sorrow
To paraphrase this, under free and fair elections, he wont give him his sister because he would obviously be declared as a winner, i mean Chamisa. According to majority survey Mnangagwa wont survive the battle because people need transformation not 38yrs of stagnant in term of development in Zim
Chamisa is looking for second wife,if not two to add to the one she displays in news papers. Anyman, with a little bit of respect for his wife will not advertise her. This time he almost let the cat out of the bag , the man is not happily married.Keep on looking Va ED is a very generous man ,he will help you to get a good wife when you fail dismally to win the elections.Your wife must be tired of being insulted. You just have a very big mouth.Tsvangarai never groomed you to be the next president. He just wanted to keep you next to him to keep that big mug shut.Signs are there that you are abusing your wife.
Culturally Chamisa was right. To those who know our culture and deal meaning of shona, there was nothing wrong in saying that, infact the true meaning is that he values his sister more than Munangagwa.
Chamisa’s sister has rights as an individual and i am wondering if Chamisa got her consent to say what he said. Some claim that culturally Chamisa is right but I am not sure how his sister is answerable to him. EDhas my vote simply because he will be more focused on developing Zimbabwe rather than enriching himself. The last GNU produced hungry financial wolves from MDC who looted at every opportunity and giving people like Chamisa the Presidency is starting a new cycle of cronyism, chicanery and corruption. ED had seen it all and realised that the true attainment of independence means that the people have suffered enough and need a turn around of their fortunes. I would rather have ED in power for the next 5 years and judge him on his own achievements having learnt a valuable lesson in the last 37 years. Just imagine having another round where everyone connected to Chamisa by totem, marriage, or other wise start a cycle of corruption and nepotism
In a free and fare election he specified
vanhu muno rwadziwawo nezvisina basa nekuti zvataurwa nachamisa ko mapositori ekwamarange varikuroodza vana sei musingataura
vanhu muno rwadziwawo nezvisina basa nekuti zvataurwa nachamisa ko mapositori ekwamarange varikuroodza vana sei musingataura
We are speaking against that even now, in fact there are laws against those vapostori, but I am afraid if Chamisa becomes president he may reverse them
Kupedzera miseve kumakunguwo
As we approach the elections could Mr Chamisa start behaving as an aspiring leader of a country and speak less and less.
We all have jokes Chamisa munhu saka chakaipa chii kana aka akaita matauriro akaita kosei Garwe akati tunongo hukura tichingo famba was it not jokes kwanai vanhu imwe munosiya kubata zvakana muchitarisa zvisina basa sei kwanai marimba.
a clear joke y the fuss who wud give away his or her sister to
It was just a joke guys and
nothing more.Don’t you get it
A lot of critical comments are coming from EDiots supporters but the actual interpretation of Chamisa’s joke is it is impossible for Ed to win a free and fair election! And as a matter of fact Chamisa’s 18year old sister doesn’t exist !
Isusu pachishona chedu tinotopika namai chaivo – Shona is a very rich language- what Chamisa said was in Shona and mustn’t be interpreted in English!
this young man really knows how to construct his jokes based on his cultural values. HATE him, LOVE him… its the language we use everyday to put a point across. dont try to divert the true meaning of his words to what you guys think should be corrected. You are from Zimbabwe and you know what he really meant.
Nothing wrong with Chamisa statement…. kubvira kare ani nani, munhurume aiita chakanaka iipihwa mukadzi, betting with a women is the best he can offer..chisa mbama chisa…chisaaaaa
From day 1 Chamisa was.off the grid .Mbiri yake is a credit to ED ndiyo.ka democracy .nxaaa I withdrew my vote .Chamisa you are below the waist.Unosvodesa . Kutaurisa
ED for President,
I am sure you understand the context in which the joke was said. Chamisa was only speaking to his base not the general public. Thus why people were laughing at the rally.I am sure you have intellectual capacity to understand what base means in the political arena. Just like what Trump said to his base ” If Ivanka was not my daughter I would marry her” This is politics buddy. ZAPU PF supporters have been formatted like discs for 38 years thus why they are not amenable to change. This what we expect to hear from people like you. I am not sure you are a Shona speaking person, you don’t understand the Shona jokes. Be exposed and read widely and hear what world leaders would be saying to their base.
