Three Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) students namely Hererimo Giya, Eutychus Mahwekwe and Tinotenda Kumire were arrested by police officers on Friday 13 April 2018 for allegedly participating in a protest against the hiking of tuition fees at the institution, were granted $50 bail by Chivi Magistrate Bishard Chineka. The three were remanded out of custody to Friday 27 April 2018.
The trio was charged with public violence as defined in section 36(1)(a) as read with section 36(2)(e) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, was ordered to report three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Mashava Police Station and to be accompanied by some ZRP officers each time they visit GZU campus to write their end of semester examinations.
