British Foreign Secretary Meets With S.B Moyo, Vows To Support Zimbabwe's Path To Reform

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on Friday, that his country was going to do everything in its power to support Zimbabwe’s path to reform. Johnson met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, retired Lieutenant-General Sibusiso Busi (S.B.) Moyo who is also in London. Moyo had gone to attend The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) but was later notified that Zimbabwe has been denied observer status as such a status did not exist. However, the British said that Moyo was free to use the gathering to meet with delegates on the sidelines.

Writing on Twitter soon after the meeting, Johnson said,

Great meeting with ministers from across #ourCommonwealth this morning for talks with Minister Sibusiso Moyo on how Britain, the Commonwealth & the wider international community will do everything it can in supporting Zimbabwe on its path of reform.

The British government has been accused of backing president Emmerson Mnangagwa to win this year’s upcoming elections. They have also been accused of turning a blind eye to the lack of meaningful reforms in the country by some opposition parties and civic society organisations. However, the Britsh have refuted the allegations that they are backing Mnangagwa saying that they don’t care who wins the election. Simon Thomas, the Deputy Ambassador at the British Embassy Harare, has repeatedly said that the British are only interested in how the election will be conducted. He emphasised that his country is only interested in ensuring that the polls are free, fair and credible.
