BREAKING: Nurses File Urgent Chamber Application Challenging Dismissal

Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZiNA) has filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court seeking an order restraining and interdicting the Health Services Board (HSB), Health Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga from terminating services of nurses. ZiNA which is represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), also wants the High Court to declare the termination of nurses’ contracts as null and void. They also want Government to be stopped from filling their positions.

In a statement released on Thursday, the nurses gave the HSB an ultimatum to either disregard Chiwenga’s directive or face litigation. Instead, the HSB defied the ultimatum and sent out letters of dismissal to the affected nurses to regularise the dismissals. Chiwenga fired all nurses who were on strike on Tuesday claiming that they rejected a $17.1 million offer and Government moved quickly to replace them by recruiting unemployed but trained ones.
